Sony Bloggie MHS-PM5

Bloggie: Bad Name, Good Product

Despite the name of this product (The Bloggie…really? It sounds like Sesame Street finally meets technology), Sony has done an excellent job of creating a product that does what it is paid to do. It is deceptively small and has been a breeze for me to carry around.

A few friends that have this product didn’t like the screen, but so far I have been very impressed. You have to keep in mind that the function of the MHS-PM5 is to record videos for smaller resolutions most likely to be found on websites and blogs, and not for the movie theater. I have always loved the screen quality of Sony, and like other Sony products, I think with a little bit of use you will find that the LCD screen (in this case 2.4”) is extremely vivid and bright. It has a sleek body and manages to retain its cool-ness.

Like other cameras in Sony’s line, this comes with SteadyShot and Face Detection. SteadyShot is extremely useful in this case; the camera is small and can be prone to shakiness if it wasn’t for this.

But the best feature? The MHS-PM5 comes with a swivel camera, which allows you to turn it virtually anywhere you want. (I think the website said that it swiveled 270 degrees or something like that.) No more having to look embarrassed when you walk up to a naked Roman statue. (It was the quality of the marble that attracted, you, right?) You can treat it like a cell phone when you are snapping photos, or capture unique angles.   Also, note that the Bloggie does take SD cards. Finally, Sony is getting the memo.

At about $140, this is probably the best mini HD video camera on the market. Memorex has one that comes close, but lacks the HD quality that the Sony MHS-PM5 offers.
