Thinking Out Of the Smartphone Box

Google has one very powerful tool at their disposal that very few companies can compete with: a mind-boggling infrastructure for advertisement. Millions of dollars were invested into the advertising campaign for the Google Nexus One before this phone was even out of beta testing. The real question comes down to, did the Nexus One live up to the hype that was heaped upon its shoulders? The answer is, maybe.

This phone is the brainchild of HTC and Google working together for a single goal. They opted for the 1GHz Snapdragon processor to run the Android 2.1 operating system. It comes with anywhere from 4GB to 32GB’s of memory and 512MB’s of RAM. The screen is a crystal clear AMOLED with 480 x 800 resolution.

If the Nexus One has anything going for it, it is the beauty. The body of the phone, the beautiful touch screen, and the speakers almost make this phone worth buying by themselves. Unfortunately, it may seem like the extra time spent on making this smartphone pretty meant that some of the internals were neglected. The touch screen does not have a multiple touch feature which makes web browing and pouring over maps feel unnatural. The tracking ball near the base of the phone will make Blackberry users happy when navigating through huge pages.

The final grade on the Google Nexus One is…well there is no final grade. For anyone looking for a sleek looking phone with a crystal clear screen and great speakers, this is the phone for them. The problem comes down to the responsiveness of the touchscreen and the keyboard, both of which could could use a major overhaul in the next generation of the Nexus. Other than that, this power play between HTC and Google has paid off with a great smartphone.
