Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Canon is known for producing industry-leading digital SLR cameras. Its EOS 5D Mark II, the predecessor to the original EOS 5D, sets a new standard for both Canon’s digital imaging products and the companies which aim to compete with Canon’s cameras.

The EOS 5D Mark II has a 21-megapixel sensor, which most well-versed photographers were expecting to come with the device. But unlike its competitors, the EOS 5D Mark II captures full 1080p high definition video. This is a significant improvement over the 720p video shot by cameras like the Nikon D700.

The Mark II is similar in design to is predecessor, with a few visual enhancements for a more professional look on the exterior. Its read LCD is slightly larger than the EOS 5D, but its weight remains the same. And while the camera itself is still hefty, at just under two pounds, it weighs less than its largest competitor, the aforementioned Nikon D700, which weighs in at over two pounds.

The Mark II does notably improve upon the biggest complaint regarding its predecessor, the EOS 5D: its mirror component is now held down with two additional pins, which should prevent a problem numerous EOS 5D users complained about. Namely, that the mirror was falling off repeatedly, creating headaches while trying to capture images.

Overall, Canon has released a solid followup to its industry-leading EOS 5D dSLR camera. The only detractor, in testing, was that the camera’s buttons seemed spaced out and often were difficult to reach while using the camera. However, with a few uses, this issue seems like less of a detractor and more like something that you just need to get used to as a Canon digital camera user.

And with 21 megapixels, industry-leading 1080p high definition video, and a professional design, we’ll keep that complaint to ourselves.
